Red, White & Booze

The 4th of July has been my favorite holiday since I was a kid.  Beach, Bruce, booze & BBQ is the annual theme of the huge family party my Dad’s family has at the Jersey shore every year.

Last year I was feeling like at 24 years old, I should start contributing to the food and drink supply.  So naturally I decided to make red, white & blue Jello shots.  What I didn’t realize is that in my family once you bring something once and it’s a hit (which obviously these were), you are committing yourself to make that same thing every year.

Shopping list:

  • Jell-O (duh)
    3 ounce box of red
    3 ounce box of blue
  • Heavy Cream
  • Skim Milk
  • Knox powdered gelatin
  • Vodka
  • Plastic cups
50 1 ounce (I like the ones that come with lids for limited mess and easy transport)

3) Add 1 cup of vodka

**this layer sounds gross, but you just have to get over it

– 7 ounces of skim milk
– 7 ounces of vanilla vodka
– 2/3 cup of sugar
– 2 teaspoons of Knox gelatin powder
– 2 teaspoons water
– 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

1) Combine Knox powder with water in a small bowl.  Let sit for 5 minutes.
2) In a medium saucepan, heat cream, milk, sugar and vanilla extract to a simmer, while stirring occasionally.
3)  Remove from heat, add gelatin and stir until dissolved.
4) Add vanilla vodka. Let cool for 15 minutes.
5) Add layer on top of blue
